Sea Feathers and Iridescent Deep-water Glassy Sponges, |
|
|
| * One of the more beautiful of the
marine sponges is the Deep Water Glassy Sponge (Callyspongia
plicifera). At sufficient depth, these sponges appear to fluoresce
in shades of blue to near-violet. In this image they
grow among stands
of blue-grey Sea Feathers (Pseudopterogorgia sp.). Because of their
wide range of color and their variable form, they are a favorite of the underwater
photographer. North Wall, Grand Cayman Island - Depth 165 feet or 50 meters - Time 10:00 am |
